Ripstop is a lightweight fabric known for its superior tear and abrasion resistance, achieved through a reinforced weave that incorporates thicker threads at regular intervals in a grid or diamond pattern. This structure effectively contains tears, preventing them from spreading and ensuring the fabric remains functional (even if damaged), extending the life of the fabric. The unique construction along with UV resistant, waterproofing and flame resistant qualities makes Ripstop ideal for heavy-duty applications in outdoor environments where durability and strength are priority.
GSM stands for grams per square metre. It is a standard unit of measurement that indicates the weight or density of the tarp material. GSM tells you how much one square meter of the tarpaulin fabric weighs and is a key factor in determining the strength, durability and suitability of a tarp for a particular application.
A higher GSM number signifies a heavier, thicker, more robust tarpaulin. These tarps are more durable, have greater tear resistance and are better suited for heavy-duty applications or long-term exposure to harsh weather conditions. A lower GSM number indicates a lighter-weight, thinner tarp which can be easier to handle and transport, but may be less durable and more suitable for temporary coverings or light-duty tasks.
The specific material (like polyethylene or PVC), UV treatment and construction features also play significant roles in the overall quality and performance of a tarp.
It’s better to buy quality. Cheap tarps can be prone to UV degradation resulting in brittleness, tearing at stress points and fading because key components that contribute to strength and longevity may be missing, or lacking. Poor stitching lacks sufficient reinforcement which can lead to seam separation, stretching and distortion, all shortening the life of your tarp.
Cover Up has over 35 years experience as an industry leader in tarp manufacturing and supply. Our tarps are of a high standard, designed and manufactured here in Melbourne, Australia. When you choose Cover Up, you’re choosing proven expertise and lasting quality that you can trust backed by comprehensive warranties and local wholesale support.
